SEHNAOUI / TURNBULL & firends

Kathrin-Preis vom Jazzinstitut Darmstadt ausgezeichnet.

The subtle work on the tonal properties of the instrument experiences a unique interrelation in the meeting of Sharif Sehnaoui and Joss Turnbull: The Beirut-based Lebanese Sehnaoui is an Arab pioneer on the prepared steelstring guitar, while the Berlin-based percussionist Joss Turnbull is engaged in sound expansions on Arabic and Iranian hand drums. Both met at the ‚Irtijal‘ improvised music festival in Lebanon, curated by Sehnaoui.

As a musician, organizer and performer, guitarist Sharif Sehnaoui is one of the central figures of a Lebanese free music and art scene. He is co-founder of the annual experimental music festival „Irtijal“ in Beirut since 2001, the only one of its kind in the Arab world. His central instrument is the acoustic and electric guitar. Using preparations and extensions of the instrument, Sehnaoui experiments with its tonal and percussive possibilities. He has made guest appearances in the United States and at festivals throughout Europe (such as the Nickelsdorfer Konfrontationen and the CTM Festival) and has performed with Michael Zerang and Eddie Prévost, Daunik Lazro, Jean-François Pauvros, and Roger Turner, among others.

Berlin-based percussionist and „self-confident artistic free spirit“ (SWR 2) Joss Turnbull is committed to avant-garde projects in collaboration with musicians from non-European traditions. He plays the Iranian hand drum Zarb-e-Zurkhane and the related Tombak. Using rubber balls, tremmolo stick, foil and tuning fork, Turnbull experiments with their sonic and melodic properties. Featured on Deutschlandradio Kultur as „one of the most exciting percussionists of his generation,“ he released his solo album „Isturnbull“ in 2013. Concerts followed as a soloist and with international musicians in Japan, USA, North Africa and the Middle East. In 2015, he received a prize from GBG Mannheim in the solo artist category, a scholarship from the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg and the Roger Willemsen Foundation. In 2019 he was awarded the 1st Kathrin Prize by the Jazzinstitut Darmstadt.
